Ibilkari didn't start as a business model, but as a movement. Behind it stands Eusko CarSharing Elkartea — a non-profit association founded in Bilbao in 2008 to promote a more conscious approach to car use. Ibilkari is its car sharing initiative for the Basque Country: neighbourhoods, municipalities and businesses share vehicles instead of each buying their own.
With Ibilkari, you only pay for the time and distance you actually drive. No purchase price, no insurance, no vehicle tax, no maintenance, no hunting for parking. Booking, unlocking and returning all happen around the clock through the app — made possible by Zemtu's booking and access technology. If you don't need a car every day, you still have one when it counts.
Ibilkari is part of a wider family of Basque car sharing initiatives under the umbrella of Eusko CarSharing Elkartea — together with Ukanauto, which grew out of the municipalities of Uribe Kosta and Arratia, and the neighbourhood-driven Auzokar. Together they bring shared mobility to cities, small towns and rural communities across the Basque Country: one shared technology, many local roots.
At Ibilkari, it was never simply about renting out cars — it was about giving people in the Basque Country a real alternative to owning one. As a non-profit initiative, we need technology that is reliable and easy to manage. With Zemtu, we run our entire fleet through a single app — so our energy goes into the community instead of into administration.
